Eye of Horus Review

Eye of Horus is a 5-reel, 10-line Egypt slot with two ideas: Horus expands over his reel as a wild, and in the 12 free games each Horus upgrades the tablet symbols so the screen fills with better-paying ones.

About the game

The Merkur version shown here is one of the most played slots in Germany on Slots Launch. It looks like a classic cabinet slot, with line numbers on both sides and buttons for lines, bet per line, paytable and gamble.

It's often compared with Book of Ra Deluxe, but it plays differently: there is no book and no single expanding symbol; the wild expands in every spin, and the free games improve step by step.

Eye of Horus Features

Expanding Horus

Horus is the wild. He substitutes for every symbol except the scatter, and when he lands he expands to cover his whole reel.

Free games

3 or more tomb-door scatters anywhere start 12 free games. The scatter also pays: 2×, 20× or 50× your total bet for 3, 4 or 5.

Upgrades and extra spins

In the free games every Horus that lands upgrades the tablet symbols. The info screen shows the order: ankh and lotus at the bottom, then scarab, falcon and Anubis up to the Eye of Horus. The more Horus wilds you see, the more of the low tablets turn into better ones.

Horus also adds spins in the bonus: 1, 2 or 3 of him give up to 1, 3 or 5 extra free games. Free games can be won again with scatters.

Gamble

There is a Gamble button next to Start, as in Merkur's cabinet games, to try to double a win.

Symbols and payouts

All symbols need 3 on a line from the left. Prizes are multiples of the line bet.

Line wins as multiples of the line bet, from the paytable in the demo.

The scatter pays 2×, 20× or 50× the total bet for 3, 4 or 5 anywhere. We checked that by changing the number of lines: the scatter prize changed, the line prizes didn't.

How to play

Pick 1 to 10 lines and the bet per line. The paytable always shows the prizes for your current setting. Only the highest win per line is paid, and scatter wins are added on top.

RTP

The demo doesn't show the RTP. Merkur's casino versions can have different settings, so check the game info where you play.

Other versions

There are many Eye of Horus follow-ups, including a Megaways version and the Gold Spins editions from Blueprint. They keep Horus and the upgrades but add other features. This page is about the classic 10-line game.

Eye of Horus Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • Wild expands in every spin
  • Free games improve with each Horus
  • Extra spins and retriggers
  • Clear, classic layout

Limitations

  • RTP not shown in the demo
  • Only 10 lines
  • Plain graphics

Our Verdict

Eye of Horus is a classic that keeps the rules short. The expanding wild makes the base game a bit livelier than a book slot, and the free games get better the longer they run.

If you play Merkur games, this is one of the titles worth knowing.
